There will be a Big Apple Comic, Art, Toy & Sci Fi Convention on June 23rd-24th Saturday-Sunday in New York City. If anyone on this board is planning to attend, send me an E-mail. I will be there on Sunday. LOL. Gale www.bigapplecon .com |

If you're in NYC this weekend I also HIGHLY recommend hitting the MoCCA (Museum of Comic & Cartoon Art) ArtFest in SoHo. I believe that there's a deal with Big Apple that admission to one gets you into both but I may be wrong. The MoCCA show is dedicated to artists of mostly independent comics. www.moccany.org |

MoCCA has a much different vibe than Big Apple or most other comic conventions. For one thing, there aren’t any vendors there selling back issues, statues, action figures, bootleg movie or any thing like that. Everyone is hawking their own wares. You also get a less geeky crowd and more hipster artsy types which is kind of cool till someone starts denigrating mainstream superhero comics and those that enjoy them. Many more women attend, too. Moby is on MoCCA’s board so I’ve seen him wandering around the last few times I’ve gone. |

Colin, Thank you for recommending to visit Museum of Comic & Cartoon Art and ArtFest in SoHo. I wasn’t planning to go there, but the Big Apple Comic, Art, Toy & Sci Fi Convention end up being a very boring event – can you imagine! Nothing was happening there. Only vendors. A dozen of geeks came dressed up in costumes, but even they got bored after a while. They all gathered in a lunchroom and played cards! The MOCCA Art Festival in SoHo was very different. It is different energy. So many talented artists! One is better than the other! You could watch artists creating comics. You could talk to the artists and buy their signed books. The art exhibits and the museum were in two different buildings, and everyone was running back and forth, which was kind of interesting. There were many signs directing the crowd inside both buildings, but no signs or instructions how to get from one building to another. However, one street artist positioned himself exactly in the middle of both locations and he directed all the festival traffic: museum – this direction, exhibits – that direction. It was fun to watch him, because he was selling his art at the same time. Overall, the MOCCA Art Festival was a very interesting event and I would highly recommend to everyone to visit this very unusual museum. |

Comic and Sci Fi "CON"s come in two varieties. 1) A floor full of vendors selling stuff. these really should be called "Shows" and not "Cons". 2) Events with panel discussions where you can listed to industy insiders talk about what they are doing, where the industry is heading, and mayeb have question and answer sessions at the end of the panel for the attendees to ask specific questions. They also have a "dealer floor". These are the good ones. New York has one of these in late February. Philly's just past in mid June. San Diego Comic Con, the biggest, is the end of July. Chicago is August. Skip the first unless you are only looking to buy stuff. |
